Around The Bay Wrap Up - 2019

After a mechanical issue prematurely finished Stuart's 2018 ride, the two questions on everyone's lips this year were 1) will Stuart make it? and 2) how long would it take him to ride 300km Around The Bay on a 2-speed Brompton?

Before we get to the red-bearded star of the show (aka Stu), let us recap on the event.  United Energy Around The Bay is a huge public cycling event run by Bicycle Network.  It's not a race, but a personal challenge with various route lengths to choose from with the aim of raising money for The Smith Family.

As you'll recall from our previous post, Dayna signed up to do a fast 50km ride with some of the local Brompton riders. Starting at 7:30am, they rode over the Westgate Bridge twice as the route took them from Albert Park to Williamstown, back to Elwood, to return to Albert Park for the finish. The enthusiastic northerly wind was helpful at times, and a hindrance at others, but in general it was a great day for the ride!

By the time Dayna's group was lining up to start, Stu was already 2 hours into his ride and setting a blistering pace on his 2-speed (60T) Brompton. Despite encountering an elevation gain of 2,508m over the 307km route, Stu managed to maintain an average speed of 27.5kph/17.09mph. Talk about monstering the course! If you didn't see him, you blinked! Finishing in 11h 11m is truly an effort worth congratulating!

Our thanks to Bicycle Network staff and the many wonderful volunteers who make this iconic event happen every year. It's not too late to make a donation to The Smith Family using the links below. We are riding to raise money to help break the cycle of disadvantage for our youth, so please give generously.
